How the hourly wage is calculated

From a monthly salary

Hourly wage = monthly salary ÷ (weekly hours × 4.33). The factor 4.33 is the average number of weeks per month (52.14 weeks per year ÷ 12 months). Example: a monthly salary of €3,500 at 40 weekly hours works out to roughly €20.14 per hour.

From a yearly salary

Hourly wage = yearly salary ÷ (weekly hours × 52.14). The figure 52.14 comes exactly from 365.25 days divided by 7. A yearly salary of €42,000 at 40 weekly hours also works out to roughly €20.14 per hour.

Reverse calculation

To find your monthly or yearly salary from a known hourly wage, simply invert the formula: salary = hourly wage × weekly hours × 4.33 (monthly) or × 52.14 (yearly).

Gross vs. net hourly wage

The hourly wage calculated on this page is a gross figure. Wage tax, solidarity surcharge and church tax (where applicable), as well as your share of health, nursing care, pension and unemployment insurance are deducted from it. Your actual net hourly wage is therefore noticeably lower than the gross figure.

To find your net hourly wage, first calculate your net salary with the full gross-net calculator and then divide the result by your monthly or yearly working hours.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hourly Wage

How do I calculate my hourly wage from a monthly salary?
Divide your gross monthly salary by your average working hours per month. Since a month has an average of 4.33 weeks (52.14 weeks per year ÷ 12 months), the formula is: hourly wage = monthly salary ÷ (weekly hours × 4.33). At a monthly salary of €3,500 and 40 weekly hours, that works out to roughly €20.14 gross per hour.
How do I calculate my hourly wage from a yearly salary?
Divide your gross annual salary by your total yearly working hours: hourly wage = yearly salary ÷ (weekly hours × 52.14). The figure 52.14 comes from 365.25 days divided by 7 days per week and is the exact average number of weeks in a year.
Is the calculated hourly wage gross or net?
The hourly wage calculated here is a gross figure — before wage tax, solidarity surcharge, church tax, and social security contributions. To find out how much you take home net per hour, first calculate your net salary with the gross-net calculator, then divide the result by your monthly or yearly working hours.
Why use 4.33 weeks per month instead of 4?
A calendar month has slightly more than 4 weeks on average (52.14 weeks ÷ 12 months ≈ 4.33 weeks). Using a flat 4 weeks would systematically understate monthly working hours and overstate the resulting hourly wage. Using 4.33 follows the standard convention used by German salary calculators.
How does part-time work affect my hourly wage?
Part-time work doesn't automatically change your hourly wage — it depends on the agreed salary relative to the actual agreed weekly hours. If salary and hours are reduced proportionally (e.g. a 50% position with half the salary and half the hours), the hourly wage stays the same as full-time. If only the hours are reduced while the salary stays the same, the calculated hourly wage increases.
